Do a quick Google search of the term 'doctor burnout' and you'll see over 22 million results. One study, published by the National Center for Biotechnology Information, found that nearly 46 per cent of physicians report having at least one symptom of burnout.
While the medical profession is a naturally high-pressure job, there is no reason burnout should be a foregone conclusion. As a doctor, you just need to arm yourself with the right tools to combat burnout before it happens. Luckily, we compiled a list that will accomplish just that.
1. Know the signs

2. Don't be afraid to say no
Doctors are people-pleasers by nature – it's part of what makes them such amazing professionals. It's not uncommon for doctors to want to say 'yes' to every favour or task put in front of them. However,saying no is a key step in not overworking yourself. Give yourself permission to decline extra work or last minute appointments – make your free time a staple, not a necessity.
3. Ask for what you need
Do you need to take a gym break on your lunch to clear your mind? Are flexible work hours something that would make your life less stressful? Whatever you need to ease the burden that leads to burnout, you're not going to get it unless you ask. Speak to your directors or supervisors to try and work out an arrangement that would best suit everyone.
