The Meal of Kindness

Introduction

Lending a helping hand to the ones in need is not merely an act of charity but a social responsibility. Being successful does not only mean achieving a few targets and awards, but it means the impact that you can make in someone else’s life with that success. Real success lies in the number of lives you can influence, no matter how big or small the count is.

Realising the social responsibility of giving back to society and impacting lives in meaningful ways, we, the team of CC Medicals, decided to do our part to help the unprivileged. Illiteracy and hunger are significant social problems prevalent all around the world, and primary education is the leading factor contributing to improvements in social outcomes and productivity. People from poor financial backgrounds are forced to withdraw their children from school and put them to work.

Meal for kids initiative

To help sixty five such unprivileged children in a turmoiled Sri Lanka, we have taken the responsibility of sponsoring them for three meals a day for twenty four months, whilst attending school. The initiative aims to encourage the return of working children back to school by removing the barriers to accessing an education - their need to work to eat. What’s more, it is 100% community-driven, with local mums sourcing and preparing the food themselves. The initiative covers students from three schools in Sri Lanka- Waladuwa Siyabalagaswewa, Welusumana, and Mihinthale Maha Vidyalaya.

According to CNBC,

“The pandemic-induced strain on finances has been significant, with government revenues coming under excessive pressure as the important revenue-generating tourism sector has effectively been on pause since early 2020,” said Murkherjee. “Migrant worker remittances have also suffered a major setback.”

To obtain some kind of financial stability, the government has placed restrictions on access to savings, capping withdrawals to $200 per day, which can place a significant strain on productivity, particularly on businesses that need supplies to generate cash flow. The flow-on effects families' ability to provide food, clothing and other essentials.

The parents have welcomed the initiative, saying,

“Amazingly, people on the other side of the world care about us, people they have never met. We are eternally grateful to have received such a wonderful blessing from our partners at CC Medicals. We cannot thank them enough, and it is a delight that our children can find an education without the constant worry of having to work to feed themselves.”

We at CC Medicals believe that we have a crucial role to play in improving the welfare of communities. Whether it be supporting the health system to source and secure long term desperately sought-after medical expertise or supporting the next generation of talent, we live and breathe our motto,
PEOPLE FIRST.

Big enough to rely on, small enough to care.
