The UK government has recently faced some significant backlash from its healthcare professionals. Senior doctors, junior doctors, nurses and physiotherapists alike are dissatisfied with the UK's pay cut and pension crisis and have been unified in their protests to the government’s perceived lack of response. Medical professionals are taking industrial action as their last resort to make themselves heard by health ministers.
In a consultative ballot voting run by the British Medical Association, almost all junior doctors and about 86% of the senior doctors voted in favor of going on a strike as their "last resort."
Although this ballot doesn't allow them to strike legally, the BMA has said that they will proceed to a statutory ballot of Consultants if the government doesn't consider their proposal. This ballot, if successful, will provide the Association with a legal mandate for industrial action and allow the Consultants to strike.
NHS Confederation has acknowledged this rising concern, stating that strikes would make it challenging to keep essential emergency services operating at adequate levels. With senior doctors also rallying in support, the situation could be quite dire for the entire health system, putting patient care in the UK under further stress and crisis.
Healthcare professionals are taking industrial action because the government has repeatedly failed to address their pay concerns.
With one of the worst rates of inflation affecting Britain in decades, the wage cut and the longstanding "pension tax traps" adding to the cost-of-living crisis, the health system is tipping to breaking point. According to the BMA, doctors' wages have fallen by almost 35% since 2009 in real terms and all this has been forcing experienced doctors to quit and leave the NHS entirely.
With the pay cut and growing work pressure, doctors have been working dangerous hours to stretch resources to help cover staff shortages. This has been taking a toll on mental and physical well-being, and all for pay that does not adequately remunerate them.
The chaotic condition of the entire healthcare system in the UK is not only the result of the lack of attention given to the doctors' recent plight; it is a long-suppressed dissatisfaction of medical professionals with the UK healthcare system. Many doctors are hence seeking opportunities in other countries.
